A crisis we did not cause — but are forced to manage. Yes, harvesting rain matters. But so does climate justice: resilient infrastructure, protected watersheds, and global financing that reflects the reality on the ground.

Dr. James Fletcher, former Energy Minister of Saint Lucia and founder of the Caribbean Climate Justice Project and Youth Innovators for Renewable and Inclusive Energy, Youth IRIE, has been named a Renewable Energy Champion for the Caribbean under the Renewable Energy Champions Initiative.

Working with former energy ministers from Uruguay and Ethiopia, Dr. Fletcher will help guide and support today’s energy leaders across the Global South, sharing hard-earned lessons, opening critical doors, and strengthening decision-making in the transition to renewable and inclusive energy systems.

For the ninth consecutive year, the ocean has broken its own heat record.

Our oceans absorb most of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases, and that heat doesn’t disappear. It fuels stronger storms, raises sea levels, and threatens coral reefs and marine life that coastal communities depend on.

For the Caribbean, a warming ocean means higher risks and tougher choices, but also a stronger call for climate action, ocean protection, and resilience. What happens beneath the surface affects us all.

"A high level dialogue on the opening day of the 16th IRENA Assembly. A few things stood out:

The Caribbean is well represented by my friend and fellow advocate for the transition to renewable energy, Hon Dr Vince Henderson, the energy minister of Dominica, who is the driving force behind what will soon be CARICOM’s first geothermal plant - a 10 MW facility in Dominica.

Another Caribbean son of the soil, another friend and fellow Liverpool supporter, UN Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Selwin Hart was on the panel speaking on behalf of the UN.

There was only one woman on the panel (apart from the moderator), who was there to bring a youth perspective to the discussions. Hopefully she is a sign of what will be increasing gender balance among the energy leaders globally.

The momentum for renewable energy adoption and use continues to grow. However, there are several issues that we need to address locally.

With the significant geopolitical instability, most of which impacts the world’s oil and gas sector, it is absolutely imperative that Saint Lucia takes advantage of the opportunities provided by wind energy, distributed generation by solar photovoltaic with battery energy storage systems (driven by improving technology and reducing prices), and geothermal energy, to make a full, just transition away from the use of imported fossil fuels to generate electricity. This would insulate us from price volatilities in the world oil market, give us true energy security, and allow us to reduce the cost of electricity, which in turn would increase the competitiveness of all our economic sectors and help domestic consumers - ordinary citizens, save valuable money. We can and must make it happen!"

THROWBACK THURSDAY...
On Monday, 10th June 2024 - the final day of our Youth IRIE Convening on Sustainable Energy and Climate Justice, these youths from across our wonderful Caribbean participated in the Second Regional Youth Parliament on Climate Justice and Sustainable Energy. We hosted some of the brightest minds, and highly committed individuals from the region's north, OECS and south.

Caribbean Voices at COP30

At COP30, Caribbean leaders made it clear that climate change is no longer a future threat but a daily reality for small island states. From rising seas to stronger storms, the impacts are accelerating faster than the support needed to confront them.

The region is calling for climate action that prioritizes resilience, fair access to finance, and real progress on loss and damage. For the Caribbean, climate justice is about survival, stability, and protecting development gains in a changing world.

Words have been spoken. What matters now is delivery.

German-Caribbean Climate Dialogue: Urgency, Ambition, Resilience

After COP30, leaders and experts gathered in Grenada for the third German-Caribbean Climate Dialogues, reinforcing the urgent need to turn global commitments into real climate resilience on the ground.

Hosted by Dr. Christophe Eick, the dialogue highlighted Germany’s support for the Caribbean with new cooperation agreements and adaptation funding, while partners underscored that international ambition must now be matched with rapid and predictable support for vulnerable nations.

UN climate leadership reiterated that cooperation is essential but insufficient without targeted resources, and Climate Analytics Caribbean emphasized that adaptation finance and implementation mechanisms must grow faster than ever before.

Regional voices affirmed that policy must translate into action, accountability must be enforced, and resilience planning must be inclusive and forward-looking. COP30 set the direction; now we must accelerate toward climate justice and tangible resilience outcomes.

Barbados is embracing a bold vision for its future through a sweeping US$5 billion plan that places renewable energy at its core. Under the Green Industrialisation Gateway Advantage (GIGA) plan, the island is investing heavily in clean power, including wind, solar and bioenergy, to transform its electricity sector and support sustainable industrial growth. This shift isn’t just environmental, it’s economic, offering new green-jobs, energy security and a modern foundation for technology, life sciences and climate-resilient development.

Barbados is embracing a bold vision for its future through a sweeping US$5 billion plan that places renewable energy at its core. Under the Green Industrialisation Gateway Advantage (GIGA) plan, the island is investing heavily in clean power, including wind, solar and bioenergy, to transform its electricity sector and support sustainable industrial growth. In Seven Rivers, St James, where taps went dry after Hurricane Melissa, hope has returned. A mobile filtration system installed by the French Red Cross in partnership with Veolia is turning river water into safe, drinkable water through a multi-stage purification process, including membrane filtration and activated-carbon filtering, followed by chlorine treatment and rigorous testing.

For residents who once spent hundreds or even thousands on trucked water, and those drawing from unsafe springs or rivers, this water is more than a resource: it’s peace of mind. Clean water now flows freely; a small step that means everything to this community.

MONDAY INSPO...Last year at a UN climate session, a 17-year-old from Saint Vincent named Adia Daniel stood up to world leaders. She talked about how hurricanes and storms are tearing apart her island, and she asked them: “How many more storms until we act?” Her message was clear – Caribbean youth are watching and waiting for change. It wasn’t easy being one of the few voices in the room, but Adia proved that young people can demand a spot at the table.

Her story reminds us that we all have a voice. What will you do with yours? Maybe start by chatting with friends about climate or showing your support for renewable energy projects. The next big idea in your community could start with you.

Shania has worked across agriculture, coastal resilience, and geospatial technology with organizations such as the Commonwealth Blue Charter, WUSC Caribbean, and the World Bank. She is also an active advocate for youth engagement through Rotaract, SOA, UNMGCY, and the High Seas Alliance. Guided by the belief that “what you do makes a difference,” she continues to champion a more resilient Caribbean.
