Grenada has joined the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) as a Series C shareholder, becoming the sixth CARICOM member among 24 countries in its membership roster.

This milestone empowers Grenada, like other SIDS, to access agile, climate-focused financing that will fuel adaptation, strengthen infrastructure, and support sustainable development under escalating environmental threats, such as hurricanes, sea-level rise, and sargassum inundation

CAF’s Executive President, Sergio Díaz-Granados, affirmed Grenada’s reputation as a resilient and innovative SIDS, highlighting the nation's ability to rebound from climate shocks and lead meaningful regional efforts. With this partnership, Grenada is poised to strengthen its climate resilience, proving its capacity to protect its people and environment through forward-looking, scalable solutions.

While its exact track remains uncertain, the system may approach the Caribbean by mid-next week. Forecast models diverge, with some showing a westerly path toward the islands and others suggesting it may veer northward or diminish before reaching land.

Warmer-than-normal Atlantic waters and emerging climate patterns point toward an active season ahead. Take the necessary precautions.

CARICOM’s Special Envoy on Climate Change is hailing the July 23rd advisory from the International Court of Justice as an opportunity for collaboration. The ICJ’s advisory is not legally binding but does give leverage and moral weight to small states that suffer most from devastating changes to climate caused by the world’s major polluters…if they can consolidate the leverage the advisory affords them. Climate Change Threatens Millions of Children in the Caribbean & Latin America

A new UN report warns that by 2030, at least 5.9 million children and young people in our region could fall into poverty due to climate change—and that number could rise to 17.9 million if governments delay action.

Children and adolescents are the most vulnerable to cyclones, heatwaves, and floods, yet climate financing rarely prioritizes the essential services they need most—health, nutrition, education, water, and sanitation.

Today, only 3.4% of multilateral climate finance is directed towards protecting children, despite the urgency.

Caribbean nations are stepping up resilience efforts through the new CA-RES initiative, backed by a €4 million EU grant and implemented by UNDP and UNDRR.

The programme will strengthen early warning systems, enhance preparedness, and support inclusive recovery in countries including Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, and Suriname.

By building capacity at every level—from governments to local communities—the goal is simple but urgent: to make the Caribbean safer, more adaptable, and better prepared for the shocks of climate and crisis events.

Dr. Fletcher’s contributions have extended globally, particularly in international climate negotiations. As a lead negotiator for the Caribbean, he played a vital role in securing the 2015 Paris Agreement and was a core advocate for the “1.5 to stay alive” campaign, underscoring the urgency of climate action for small island nations.

Dr. Fletcher is a prominent advocate for renewable energy and sustainability in the Caribbean. Serving as Saint Lucia’s Minister for Public Service, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science, and Technology from 2011 to 2016, he led initiatives to modernize the energy sector, promoted the use of renewable energy, improved water management, and increased technology access.

His distinguished career has also included roles at the OECS Commission as Director of Social and Sustainable Development. He also served as Cabinet Secretary for the Government of Saint Lucia, and Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries.

He wrote and published the book Governing in a Small Caribbean Island State, he authored the chapter ‘The Battle for Small Island Developing States’ in the Cambridge University Press publication ‘Negotiating the Paris Agreement: The Insider Stories’, and he edited and published “Where is the Justice? An Anthology of Caribbean Youth Perspectives on the Climate Crisis”.

In 2020, he launched The Caribbean Climate Justice Project, which advocates for climate justice for the people most impacted by climate change. James Fletcher holds a PhD degree in Plant Physiology from the University of Cambridge and a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Ottawa.

Today, the government is exploring fresh approaches and new technologies that could make geothermal energy a reality, while also expanding its investment in solar power. The goal is to build a cleaner, more reliable energy system that cuts costs, strengthens resilience, and secures a sustainable future.

Mexico has officially recognized sargassum—the seaweed that clogs Caribbean beaches—as a national fishing resource. This move allows harvesting at sea before it hits the shore, preventing foul odors, health risks, and economic losses in coastal communities.

Mexico says they can collect up to 945,000 tonnes of dried sargassum annually, which can be transformed into biofuels, fertilizers, bioplastics, cosmetics, animal feed, and construction materials. They will join forces with the Dominican Republic to tackle the sargassum challenge regionally.

CCJP–Youth IRIE Position on the Use of AI in Climate Advocacy

As advocates for climate justice, we believe in transparency and responsibility. While we predominantly use original content in our public education and awareness campaigns, we will occasionally use AI-generated images to enhance our messaging. This statement explains our position.

AI technologies are part of the broader global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector, which is estimated to contribute between 2% and 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions. This footprint includes emissions from smartphones, laptops, video streaming, data centers, mobile networks, and cloud computing - of which AI is a relatively small subset.

However, AI is not only a contributor to emissions; it is also a vital tool in the fight against climate change. Across the world, AI is being used to:

• Improve climate modeling and predict extreme weather events with greater accuracy;
• Generate high-resolution vulnerability maps to help protect at-risk communities;
• Power early warning systems for floods, wildfires, and landslides, thereby saving lives;
• Optimize renewable energy integration and grid stability in smart electricity systems;
• Enhance agricultural productivity and food security through precision irrigation, pest control, and yield forecasting.

In this context, the ethical and strategic use of AI in climate education and advocacy is both justified and valuable. It can improve engagement, extend reach, and mobilize action, especially among digitally connected audiences.

We remain committed to minimizing our carbon footprint and will continue to:

• Use AI only when it adds unique value to our advocacy;
• Prefer platforms powered by renewable energy;
• Advocate for sustainable and equitable digital practices.

As global energy systems shift away from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, the carbon footprint of AI technologies will also decline. Until then, our use will remain measured, transparent, and mission-driven.
