In Toucari, Dominica, sea moss farmer Brenton Mason is turning the ocean into opportunity. By cultivating sea moss in carefully managed ocean farms, he and his team are creating sustainable income while protecting marine ecosystems.

Sea moss harvested from the sea can be transformed into juices, gels, powders, and other health products. But Mason’s work goes beyond business. Through the Toucari Marine Culture Group, he is helping build a model of ocean-based livelihoods that strengthens communities and safeguards the marine environment.

Even more powerful is his focus on youth. By passing on skills and knowledge of marine culture, Mason is ensuring that the next generation understands both the value of the ocean and the responsibility to protect it.

The Climate Risk Map Just Changed - The ocean is higher than we thought. Scientists just discovered that most sea-level studies underestimated coastal water levels by about one foot. That small error changes everything.

If seas rise about 1 meter this century, up to 132 million more people could face flooding worldwide. And the biggest risk is in the Global South and island nations already on the frontline of climate change.

For many coastal communities, the future scientists are modeling, is already happening. Climate change is not a distant threat. It is rising with the tide.

For the Caribbean and the wider Global South, that figure translates into lived consequences: stronger storms, shrinking coastlines, heat stress, food system disruption, and growing fiscal strain on already vulnerable economies.

Small Island Developing States sit on the frontlines of a crisis they did not create. Preparing for higher warming scenarios must include resilient housing, protected coastlines, climate-smart agriculture, and early warning systems. But justice also requires accountability. High-emitting nations must accelerate mitigation and deliver predictable, accessible climate finance to frontline countries.

The Caribbean’s development future depends on climate action that is ambitious, equitable, and grounded in solidarity. Adaptation is survival. Mitigation is responsibility. Climate justice is non-negotiable.

Jamaica is pioneering a major step toward year-round avocado production through a new grafting process currently underway at Bodles Research Station. This effort, a first for the island, brings together the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Mining and the Trees That Feed Foundation to introduce varieties that close seasonal gaps in harvest cycles.

This innovation isn’t just about extending harvests. It supports food security, boosts farmer opportunity, and strengthens the resilience of our agricultural sector. Once the research phase wraps up, these grafted trees will be shared with growers across Jamaica, moving us closer to a future where avocados are reliably available all year.

Delegates from vulnerable and developing nations are pushing for stronger language that ties environmental taxation to concrete climate action and support for communities on the front lines of climate impacts.

For the Caribbean, a warming ocean means higher risks and tougher choices, but also a stronger call for climate action, ocean protection, and resilience. What happens beneath the surface affects us all.

"A high level dialogue on the opening day of the 16th IRENA Assembly. A few things stood out:

The Caribbean is well represented by my friend and fellow advocate for the transition to renewable energy, Hon Dr Vince Henderson, the energy minister of Dominica, who is the driving force behind what will soon be CARICOM’s first geothermal plant - a 10 MW facility in Dominica.

Another Caribbean son of the soil, another friend and fellow Liverpool supporter, UN Assistant Secretary General Ambassador Selwin Hart was on the panel speaking on behalf of the UN.

There was only one woman on the panel (apart from the moderator), who was there to bring a youth perspective to the discussions. Hopefully she is a sign of what will be increasing gender balance among the energy leaders globally.

The momentum for renewable energy adoption and use continues to grow. However, there are several issues that we need to address locally.

With the significant geopolitical instability, most of which impacts the world’s oil and gas sector, it is absolutely imperative that Saint Lucia takes advantage of the opportunities provided by wind energy, distributed generation by solar photovoltaic with battery energy storage systems (driven by improving technology and reducing prices), and geothermal energy, to make a full, just transition away from the use of imported fossil fuels to generate electricity. This would insulate us from price volatilities in the world oil market, give us true energy security, and allow us to reduce the cost of electricity, which in turn would increase the competitiveness of all our economic sectors and help domestic consumers - ordinary citizens, save valuable money. We can and must make it happen!"
