CCJP's Dr. James Fletcher Named REN21 Renewable Energy Champion

Dr. James Fletcher, former Minister for Public Service, Information, Broadcasting, Sustainable Development, Energy, Science and Technology in Saint Lucia, has been designated a Renewable Energy Champion by REN21 at the Caribbean Renewable Energy Forum (CREF) 2025 . This recognition is part of REN21’s Renewable Energy Champions Initiative, which aims to accelerate the global transition to renewable energy. Dr. Fletcher joins Ramón Méndez Galain of Uruguay as an inaugural global Champion.

REN21 acknowledged Dr. Fletcher's leadership in advancing sustainable energy policies in Saint Lucia, building strategic partnerships, and advocating for regional integration and international climate justice. His contributions to the Paris Agreement negotiations, particularly his advocacy for the 1.5°C temperature goal, were also highlighted. He currently serves as the CARICOM Climate Envoy and a Council Member of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). Dr. Fletcher is also the founder of SOLORICON Ltd., a consultancy focusing on climate change, renewable energy, sustainable development, and environmental governance, and leads the Caribbean Climate Justice Project and the Youth IRIE (Innovators for Renewable and Inclusive Energy) initiative.

The Renewable Energy Champions Initiative is supported by REN21 in collaboration with Partners for Inclusive Energy (PIE) and the Growald Climate Fund. It seeks to leverage the expertise and leadership of policymakers to enhance efforts toward clean, inclusive, and resilient energy systems. REN21, a global renewable energy community comprising actors from science, governments, NGOs, and industry, is mobilizing former ministers and senior officials to support current political leaders through energy diplomacy, policy dialogue, and strategic storytelling.

Turning Sargassum Seaweed into Sustainable Solutions

Massive sargassum seaweed blooms, exacerbated by climate change and water pollution, have plagued Caribbean shores, particularly in Grenada. These blooms emit methane, a potent greenhouse gas, and harm tourism and fisheries. However, initiatives are underway to transform this challenge into opportunity. Start-ups like SarGas are converting seaweed into biogas to power local energy demands, potentially reducing reliance on imported diesel and greenhouse emissions. Additionally, sargassum is being explored for use in construction materials, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank and World Bank have launched the US$110 million Caribbean Resilient Renewable Energy Infrastructure Investment Facility, approved on April 17, 2025, to boost clean energy in Grenada, Saint Lucia & St Vincent & the Grenadines.

By pooling projects regionally, upgrading grids with battery storage, and mobilizing US$120 million in credit guarantees, we’re tackling high electricity costs and building energy resilience. Comprehensive training, technical support, and an innovative insurance product with CCRIF will protect our green energy future. This initiative will also create new jobs and foster energy sector skills through scholarships and apprenticeships.

On March 12, 2025, Genesis Alfred (Saint Lucia) and Shahad Husain (Guyana) represented the Caribbean at the Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) Global Forum in Barbados!

This global event brought together leaders, entrepreneurs, and activists to push for sustainable energy solutions. Our youth delegates, attending through the Caribbean Climate Justice Project and Youth Innovators for Renewable and Inclusive Energy (IRIE) Program, took the stage to advocate for clean energy access and a resilient Caribbean.

Their voices matter. Their actions inspire. The future of energy belongs to those who dare to innovate!
